San Blas adventure travel destinations are a fabulous thing in 2019. Can you take your luggage to San Blas? Nope! You need to leave your luggage behind in Panama City an pack a day-bag for San Blas. If you are in these small planes, you cannot take a big bag, you can’t fit it into these packed tourist Jeeps, and you can’t take it on the small boats out to the islands. Both our original “hotel” (really just a bed over the sand) and our sailing company told us no luggage. You could get by with a backpack 48L or less I suppose. Definitely no rolling luggage! We left ours at our hotel in Panama City when we checked out. They are used to this.
In case you didn’t know, San Blas is basically it’s own little country, run by the indigenous Kuna Indians. They have their own customs and laws and in many cases Panamanian law doesn’t apply in Kuna Yala, as San Blas is also known. As a native people they have fought hard to maintain their dignity and culture and must be one of the most successful indigenous groups in the world for having done so. Tourism is allowed in San Blas only at their discretion and at times they maintain strict controls over it. It’s very difficult for a non Kuna to live within the boundaries of San Blas and practically impossible for a Kuna and non Kuna to marry and remain in San Blas. OH MY GOD. When you arrive in the South Terminal make a beeline for the bathrooms on the right just before you hit Boots and M&S. They are incredible! Basically each stall has its own sink, hand drier, and little storage area. They are HUGE. I’m 99.9% sure that some of them are bigger than most London apartments. I know it’s a little weird to be so impressed with a bathroom, but I have a tiny bladder so I always pay attention to them. Good job to whoever designed these! I loved the TV, it’s in the wall at the foot of the bed so it makes it super cosy and enclosed. You can book rooms for just 4hrs if you have a transfer, or as long as you need.
