In a typical season, our most-viewed shows list is fairly steady, but fall 2022 was no typical season. Early on in Milan, almost two years to the day after Covid broke out in Italy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted any sense of post-pandemic return to normalcy the industry was hoping for. The rest of the season was an open question, whether or not designers chose to confront it: What is fashion’s place in a moment of incipient war? After a very strange few years, a relatively normal schedule of fashion shows wrapped in March. For autumn/winter 2022, plenty of designers were back on the physical schedule after taking a few seasons off due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while more international editors and influencers also flew around the globe to sit front row at the major shows as restrictions eased.
A textured updo feels romantic and effortless so your accessories should capture this vibe. Find small pins that you can scatter to the side of your updo, or a medium sized comb which can sit in the middle to frame your wedding veil. Depending on the size of your bun and your face shape, exaggerated earrings will balance out your look and will bring attention to the front and sides. It would be a shame to cover up beautiful braids and twists so pair this look with a sheer minimalist veil or position it just above the bun (rather than the crown of your head). Avoid veils with extra wide combs (i.e. wider than 3-3.5 inches) as larger veil combs will look too bulky. Veils attached to smaller combs from 1.5 inches to 3 inches will create a more contemporary finish.
On the other end of the colour spectrum and sitting in a far quieter zone is a rise in interesting, ultra-luxe but ultimately very wearable wardrobe staples. This doesn’t translate as boring, and I’m not talking about basic tees that cost a fortune, more low-key staples with interesting twists: a trench coat with a unique label, a co-ord set with quirky buttons, a pair of tailored trousers in a more unusual silky-satin finish.
One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of runways was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of this summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Other than that, there really are no rules. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on the money. Pleated skirts may be midi for next season, but all others are raising the hemlines to minuscule lengths. These are minis that the supermodels of the ’90s would’ve been proud to wear, with well over half of the thigh exposed beneath the brief slip of fabric. Opt for super-statement shades, prints or fabrics to ensure that while the skirt may be small it still packs a real punch. Jonathan Anderson staged Loewe’s spring/summer 2022 show at the equestrian arena of La Garde Republicaine, a historic location in the centre of Paris, where models emerged through the floor, from a hidden underground space. The collection – which was the first that had been presented through a catwalk show since the pandemic began – was described by the house as a renaissance. The runway returns with an unabashed outburst of experimentation–where provocation, sensuality and movement mark a definitive point of departure.
Curtain Bangs, In addition to curly bangs, Ho says we’ll be seeing curtain bangs, like those on Camila Cabello, popping up throughout the season. They’re a slightly more laid-back approach to a fringe. “[I like] long bangs with lots of layers and texture, ranging from long hair to short bobs,” Ho says. The beauty of curtain bangs is that it’s a style you can achieve by simply growing out your shorter bangs. Another great thing about them?
